Heal My Hands had a very modest start...
It all started in 2002. I was living a busy, active life in New York. I gardened on our terrace, washed dishes and worked with glass, stone, metal, chemicals and concrete. I was a rock climber and scuba diver. I went barefoot whenever possible. That meant a lot of dry skin. Living in Manhattan, I had access to virtually every skin care product available and in my constant search to find the product that would take care of my hands, heels and other weather and work beaten parts, I eventually tried enough of them to fill my medicine cabinet. But I could never find what my skin needed, which was a simple, protective and moisturizing, all natural, petroleum free formula that I could carry easily in my bag. Lotions were too thin, heavy creams too greasy, most lotion bars or salves contained olive oil which went rancid, or borax which is soap. And none offered protection through a couple of hand washings.
One day in desperation (they do say that necessity is the mother of invention), I set about experimenting in my kitchen. It took six months of adding, subtracting and blending ingredients, in various combinations and proportions, to arrive at a product that healed my dry skin and my cracked and bleeding cuticles. Before I knew it, my friends noticed my newly soft hands and feet and started asking for cakes of their own. I packaged up some tins and tubes. Finally a good friend said, "You know Claudia, this is great stuff, you should sell it"! So here it is: Heal My Hands, Heels and Lips.
HHeal My Hands has no artificial ingredients, fragrances, or preservatives. There are no additives, fillers, stabilizers, thickeners or water. Our cakes are pure little powerhouses of emollient protection. As such, you need only use very little and the cakes last a long time.
We base our moisturizers in Jojoba and Lanolin: the only two emmolients (moisturizing engredient) with a molecule small enough to be absorbed. Shea, cocoa, hemp, almond, and avocado butters are wonderfully protective, softening and emollient, but they have big fat molecules that sit on the surface of the skin. The secret is in the Lanolin and Jojoba.
We use the best ingredients we can source. We use local ingredients whenever possible. We use organic ingredients wherever we can, and we continue to replace standard ingredients with organic ingredients as they become available.
